CNN International and Ericsson Reveal Key Consumer Insights From Joint Research Study
London, 12 February 2008: An international consumer behaviour study conducted by Ericsson (NASDAQ: ERIC) and the leading international news broadcaster CNN, has revealed that the bedroom is the #1 location respondents to watch television for periods of more than 30 minutes on their mobile handset. More than one in five (22%) people surveyed said they regularly watched in excess of half an hour of TV content in the bedroom. The result indicates that mobile TV is challenging traditional TV viewing habits in the home and that mobile TV consumers are enjoying the flexibility of anytime, anywhere access.
The study shows usage is spread across a variety of everyday situations, with almost two thirds (60%) of users choosing to watch television on their mobile phones whilst waiting for appointments and more than half (56%) watching TV on their mobile whilst on public transport.
Mobile TV use is set to surge due to strong consumer demand, with the service ranked as the number one application users want on their phone. The results of the CNN/Ericsson survey confirm that mobile TV is poised to become a mass market reality with more than a third (34%) of respondents ranking it as the most in-demand application.
According to the report, nearly one in four (24%) current mobile TV users watch daily with around half (52%) tuning in on a weekly basis. At 77%, news leads genre viewing patterns, followed by scheduled television at 48% and music (45%).
Key findings revealed that mobile streaming technology is the most desirable handset feature amongst CNN International's audience, the survey citing that almost half (44%) of respondents will adopt mobile TV within the next two years. Additionally, using photo technology to send and receive images is the most popular activity for users with 57% of those surveyed using the technology on a monthly basis. This trend is mirrored by popularity of CNN International's user-generated content service i-Report, which launched in 2006. The service, which allows viewers to respond via video image with their own reactions to news, received 50,000 submissions from 189 countries worldwide in its first twelve months.
