How Incumbents' World View is Changing

News that AT&T plans to establish at least three "innovation centers" during 2010 highlights how the  incumbent telcos now realize their world is changing fast and they need to change with it. AT&T said that the centers will be designed to enable AT&T's scientists and engineers to work directly with device makers, network equipment providers and application developers, who will have access to "a full range of AT&T services and network capabilities" to help them develop new applications.  read more »

Cost, Not Speed, is What Matters

Scandinavia once again is emerging as a favoured test-bed for the world's most advanced mobile networks. In a riposte to TeliaSonera's launch of the first commercial LTE network in Sweden and Norway, 3 Scandinavia announced last week that it has upgraded its HSPA+ network to run at a peak speed of 84 Mbps.  read more »

LTE: No Longer Late, Tempting and Elusive

LTE has arrived at the mobile data party early.  Should it have spent more time getting ready? We'll soon find out.

The first commercial mobile networks using, the now misleadingly named, Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology have been launched ahead of schedule in downtown Stockholm and Oslo by TeliaSonera.  The operator says the LTE networks are up to ten times as fast as today's "turbo 3G", which presumably means HSPA, networks.  Although TeliaSonera cites a maximum speed of 100 megabits per second, average speeds of 10 mbps seem more likely.  read more »
